HEALITE II: the light therapy.

The principle: light as a stimulus.

Around 1800 high-performance LEDs with collimating optics deliver light at 830 nm (near-infrared) and 633 nm (red). The tissue absorbs it without any injury to the skin; the literature and the manufacturer describe four effects: pain-relieving, anti-inflammatory, decongestant and cell-stimulating. The system is CE-certified, among other things for wound healing after laser treatments and procedures, and FDA-cleared in the USA at 830 nm for the temporary relief of minor muscle and joint pain, arthritis, muscle spasm and stiffness, for muscle relaxation and for a temporary increase in local blood circulation. The treatment is non-thermal, usually painless and has no downtime.

All applications of HEALITE II.

According to the manufacturer, as stand-alone therapy or alongside procedures:

• Wound healing: support and acceleration of healing, also after laser treatments and procedures; scar prophylaxis. At the foot: after nail correction, tamponade or nail brace, after Swift wart therapy and the nail-fungus laser, small wounds after podiatric care, scar care.
• Aftercare and regeneration: less pain, bruising, swelling and redness after procedures; reduction of post-inflammatory pigmentation. At the foot: calming after every treatment, after sprains and contusions, after blisters and pressure points.
• Pain and the musculoskeletal system (830 nm): temporary relief of minor muscle and joint pain, arthritis complaints and muscle spasm; less stiffness; muscle relaxation. At the foot: heel pain and plantar fascia, Achilles tendon, ankle, toe joints (hallux rigidus, hallux valgus), metatarsalgia, toe and calf cramps.
• Circulation: temporary increase in local blood circulation. At the foot: tired, heavy and cold feet, as a complement; a diagnosed circulatory disorder belongs in medical assessment first.
• Skin (633 nm): skin regeneration and collagen stimulation. At the foot: cracked heels, dry and stressed skin, after callus and corn treatment.
• Further manufacturer indications: active acne (415 nm), hair regrowth, facial skin rejuvenation; distributors also describe eczema and psoriasis. Not part of our podiatry offer; for aesthetic concerns, Villa Zeltweg in the same building is the right address.

How we use it at the foot centre.

• As an aftercare element directly after the nail-fungus laser, Swift wart therapy, nail brace or nail correction, corn, callus and cracked-heel treatment
• As a short series for heel and tendon complaints, joint complaints at the foot, stressed skin and active feet after sprains or hard training
• 10 to 20 minutes per session; the manufacturer recommends two sessions per week for a series; number and rhythm depend on findings
• Priced by findings and scope, discussed transparently in advance; a self-pay service, basic insurance does not cover light therapy

When we do not treat with light.

Not, or only after individual assessment: photosensitising medication (certain antibiotics, St John’s wort, isotretinoin), known light sensitivity, porphyria or epilepsy (precautionary), pregnancy (precautionary), tumours or unclear skin changes in the treatment area, acute infection with fever. You wear protective goggles during the session; contraindications are clarified before the first treatment.

An honest assessment.

Photobiomodulation is low-risk and well tolerated; the strength of the evidence varies by indication. It replaces neither a diagnosis nor necessary treatment, and it is no miracle cure: it is one element in a sound treatment concept, and no particular result can be guaranteed.
